The Office of Curriculum and Instruction is a three-fold program that is meant to guide and support staff development opportunities, enhance instructional implementation, and to ensure student mastery on assessments.

Exam for Acceleration

Credit by Exam (CBE) for Acceleration offers a chance to attain grade level or course credit without having previously undergone formal instruction. If there has been prior instruction, Credit by Exam (CBE) provides an opportunity to earn grade level or course credit upon the successful completion of formal instruction.

EXAMINATION FOR ACCELERATION

 

Registration for Exam for Acceleration without prior instruction is being held at all campuses for grades Kindergarten – 12. The students in grades K-5 will need to score 80 percent or above on a criterion- referenced test for the grade level to be skipped in each of the following areas: language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies. Students in grades 6-12 can receive credit for an academic subject in which the student has received no prior instruction if the student scores 80 percent or above on a criterion-referenced examination for acceleration for the applicable course.

Parents are required to submit a letter of intent along with a $25.00 refundable deposit for each examination requested to their child’s campus.  The deadline to submit the letter and deposit to the campus principal or counselor is Wednesday, February 7, 2024. The deposit will be returned once the student completes the exams. The examination dates are February 26-29, 2024.

EXAMEN DE AVANZAMIENTO

Inscripción de Examen de Avanzamiento sin instrucción previa se celebra en todas las escuelas para los grados Kínder - 12. Los estudiantes en grados K-5 habrá de tener una calificación de 80 por ciento o más en un examen de criterio y referencia del nivel que desea pasar por alto en cada una de las siguientes áreas: lenguaje, matemáticas, ciencias y ciencias sociales. Estudiantes en grados 6-12 pueden recibir crédito por una materia académica en la cual el estudiante no recibió instrucción previa, si el estudiante logra calificar con un 80 por ciento o más en un examen de criterio-referencia para la aceleración del curso aplicable.

Se requiere que los padres sometan una carta de intento junto con un depósito reembolsable de $25.00  a la escuela de su hijo/a.   La fecha de plazo para entregar la carta y el depósito al director/a o al consejero/a es el miércoles, 7 de febrero del 2024. El depósito será devuelto una vez que el estudiante termine los exámenes. La fecha de exámenes será del 26 - 29 de febrero del 2024.

Credit By Exam Frequently Asked Questions

What is Credit by Exam for Acceleration?

Credit by Exam/Exam for Acceleration provides an opportunity to earn grade level or course credit in which no prior formal instruction was completed. Credit by Exam is designed for a small percentage of students who have an academic and emotional need to advance a course or grade level.

What are the eligibility requirements for a student to register for CBE?

Students must meet all eligibility requirements to register for CBE testing:

  • Student is enrolled in a Point Isabel ISD school.

  • Student will be at least 5 years old by September 1st of the current year.

  • Registration form is completed and returned to school principal by the deadline listed on the form.

  • Campus principal must sign the registration form to verify student’s grade level and eligibility.

What is the registration process?

All CBE registrations are completed through the school counselor.

Are the tests administered on paper or online?

Tests for grades 3 and higher will be taken online. Grades K - 2 tests are taken on paper.

After my student has taken the Credit by Exam, can I review the exam questions?

The CBE assessments are considered secure; we are not allowed to release them.
