Texas A & M's Spark! Hosts Interactive Robotics Workshop for Port Isabel Junior High School Students

Port Isabel, TX - February 9, 2024 - The College & Career Readiness Department at Point Isabel Independent School District (ISD) recently hosted a dynamic educational event in collaboration with Texas A&M Spark! PK-12 Engineering Education Outreach. Led by Andy De La Cruz, the Texas A&M Spark! team brought an exciting robotics experience to Port Isabel Junior High School, engaging students in hands-on activities aimed at strengthening critical thinking skills and fostering an interest in coding and robotics.
 
The workshop featured interactive sessions where students had the opportunity to work with Ozobot robots, guiding these pint-sized robots along colorful paths while exploring coding fundamentals. The event, attended by 50 enthusiastic 6th graders, provided an engaging and immersive experience that aimed to empower students with essential coding and robotics knowledge.

Superintendent Terri Capistran expressed her excitement about the collaboration, stating, "We are thrilled to provide our students with this unique opportunity to explore the fascinating world of robotics and coding. Initiatives like these align with our district's commitment to preparing students for success in college and careers."
 
Dr. Juan J Mendoza, Director of College and Career Readiness, played a pivotal role in organizing and supporting the event from its preliminary stages to instruction. "We believe that exposure to hands-on STEM experiences is crucial for our students' future success," said Dr. Mendoza. "Events like these not only inspire curiosity but also help develop valuable skills that are essential in today's rapidly evolving job market."
 
Port Isabel Junior High Principal Debra Quist, along with dedicated teachers, was present to support and encourage students throughout the workshop. Principal Quist emphasized the importance of providing students with diverse learning opportunities to prepare them for the challenges and opportunities of the future.
 
The interactive robotics workshop is part of Spark!'s broader mission to empower Rio Grande Valley students with the knowledge and skills necessary for success in advanced manufacturing and other STEM-related fields. By fostering a passion for STEM education at an early age, initiatives like these aim to equip students with the tools they need to thrive in an increasingly technology-driven world.
